fanny pack

Fanny pack holsters or belt packs as they are sometimes referred to, are a specialized firearm concealment option. They are generally worn by users in warmer climates to compensate for lack of clothing/pockets. A typical fanny pack holster is a small fabric pouch secured with a zipper and worn at the waist by a strap which wraps around the hips. Fanny packs are also available in leather.

Typical fanny packs are designed so that they may be slung either forward, to the side, or to the rear of the wearer. The name fanny pack comes from the fact that they were traditionally worn towards the rear above the buttocks. Once popular with hikers, bicyclists and of course tourists, the fanny pack today is considered unfashionable by most people.

Despite its unpopularity with the mainstream, the fanny pack is still a useful and popular way of carrying a concealed firearm for permit holders and off duty police. Invented and patented by Gene Desantis in 1989, fanny packs designed for concealed gun carry are now produced by several holster makers including of course, DeSantis Holster & Leather Goods Co as well as Galco, Blackhawk, Bianchi, Safariland, Uncle Mikes and more. Usually fanny pack holsters have some sort of quick release to draw your firearm quickly when needed.

Despite the name, most who use fanny packs to carry a firearm generally wear them in the front because wearing them on the rear makes them harder to access when the weapon needs to be drawn. Also if wearing the fanny pack holster in the rear position you risk losing your firearm to a pick pocket.
